Water Tanks

Boys standing near a water tankWith taps in many African cities running for less than 10 hours per week, water tanks help to solve these supply problems by collecting water when it flows.

Each water tank helps more than 500 people, has a lifespan of at least 10 years, and yet only costs $A1500 to install, monitor, and maintain.

This means that it costs only $A3.00 per person to supply clean, safe, and reliable water for ten years or more - that's only 30 cents per year for each person helped.

Water Wells

Boys drawing water from a wellIn rural areas piped water does not exist. Women and children need to walk many kilometers to carry water from the nearest natural source.

Carrying heavy water containers is an exhausting task, which takes up valuable time and energy. It prevents women from tending to their homes or earning an income, and stops children from going to school.

Each water well helps more than 200+ people and costs $2000 to dig.

Bore holes are the best long term solution for a rural community . but they are expensive. Each bore hole with pumping equipment costs approximately $A15,000.

The Facts

1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to safe water, this is roughly one sixth of the world's population.

1 child dies every 15 seconds from water-related diseases. This amounts to nearly 6000 deaths, or the equivalent of 20 jumbo jets crashing, every day.

Clean water saves lives - 2.2 million people in developing countries, most of them children, die every year from diseases associated with a lack of access to safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation and poor hygiene.

Diarrhoea alone kills 1.8 million children under five every year, but most cases can be prevented or treated.

Washing hands with soap & water can reduce diarrhoeal diseases by over 40%.

Sick children force mothers to stay at home to care for them. When fathers are ill they cannot earn money . forcing their families deeper into poverty. Clean & safe water helps to solve these problems.

Australians each use on average 200 litres of water each day.

In the developing world the average person uses 10 litres of water every day for their drinking, washing and cooking. This is the same amount used in the flush of an average Australian toilet.

Unpredictable water supply in many African cities often means that taps run for less than ten hours per week, forcing people to buy water at highly inflated prices.

40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa. On average this means women & children carry water for up to 4 hours each day.

Safe & clean water helps people help themselves - water wells and water tanks improve health and free up time and energy. This means there is more time to earn money, attend school, and build healthier communities.
